Digital Marketers Get Imposter Syndrome Too—Here’s How I Deal With It

A close-up photo of an egg that has a drawn-on Sharpie face and looks fearful.

Ever felt like you're just faking it? Like one day someone will “find you out,” even though you’ve worked hard to be where you are?

Yep—same here.

Since starting Danielson Media, I’ve had the privilege of helping amazing brands grow online, but that doesn’t mean imposter syndrome hasn’t crept in. It shows up quietly, usually when I’m stepping out of my comfort zone or celebrating a big win.

What Is Imposter Syndrome, Really?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern where people doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a "fraud." Even when there’s clear evidence of success, those dealing with imposter syndrome often chalk it up to luck or timing—not skill or hard work.

Some common signs:

  • You downplay your wins.

  • You feel like you’re “faking it.”

  • You compare yourself to others and feel like you’re falling short.

  • You avoid celebrating success because it doesn’t feel “earned.”

Sound familiar?

Why It Hits Creatives and Entrepreneurs So Hard

As creatives, marketers, and business owners, we live in a world of constant comparison. Social media is filled with carefully curated highlights. Online courses and expert reels are everywhere. It’s easy to feel like everyone else knows what they’re doing—except you. When you’re wearing all the hats—designer, strategist, content creator, analyst, client whisperer, it’s no wonder you might feel overwhelmed or “not enough.” But let me remind you: doing many things doesn’t make you less qualified- it makes you resilient, adaptable, and incredibly capable.

My Experience With Imposter Syndrome

When I first launched Danielson Media, I was proud, but also terrified. I was helping small businesses grow their online presence, creating content, and building strategies from scratch.

But that little voice in my head? It kept saying, “Who do you think you are to run a business?”

Even when clients were happy and results were coming in, I’d question myself. Was I really good at this, or just getting lucky? Over time, I’ve learned that voice doesn’t just disappear. But I’ve also learned it doesn’t get the final say.

What’s Helped Me Manage It

Here’s what’s helped me quiet the imposter syndrome and step more confidently into my role:

  • Reframing the narrative: Instead of thinking “I’m not qualified,” I now say, “I’m learning and growing—and that’s enough.”

  • Celebrating small wins: Not everything has to be a huge milestone. Posting consistently, trying a new strategy, or getting great feedback from a client? That’s worth celebrating.

  • Talking about it: The more I talk to other creatives and business owners, the more I realize everyone feels this way sometimes.

  • Tracking progress: Looking back on old projects reminds me just how far I’ve come.

You’re Not Alone in This

If you’ve ever doubted yourself or felt like you weren’t “legit” enough—know this: you’re not alone, and you’re not a fraud. You’re showing up. You’re trying. You’re growing.

And that’s what matters.

You don’t need to have it all figured out to start showing up. If you’re ready to build your brand online but imposter syndrome is holding you back, I’m here to help. Let’s bring your message to life—with strategy, creativity, and heart.
